acupuncture
Dr Holland is one of only a few internationally certified veterinary acupuncturists in the United Kingdom.
Acupuncture is an ancient practice that has been shown to help horses of all disciplines with a variety of conditions. It can reduce inflammation, support microcirculatory processes, relieve musculoskeletal and myofascial trigger point pain, and regulate various systems throughout the body. Dr Holland employs a variety of techniques, including dry needling, moxibustion, aqua needling and electroacupuncture, as necessary, to ease acute or chronic musculoskeletal pain. Studies in humans have shown it is useful for infertility and immune issues, and post traditional veterinary care not working Dr Holland has successfully used it for both problems in horses.
Horses tolerate this popular treatment well. It is safe, with few negative side effects. The treatment entails inserting very fine, sterile needles into specific points on the body. For competition horses subject to strict drug regulations, acupuncture is an excellent therapeutic, drug-free treatment.
The practice originated in China, where pain and illness are regarded as signs that the body is out of balance. In the East, acupuncture is used to restore the balance between the body and its environment. In Western studies, the insertion of needles has been found to stimulate the release of pain-relieving endorphins and serotonin. Dr Holland is one of just a few veterinary acupuncturists in the UK who specialises in both Western and Chinese practices. She combines her extensive knowledge to achieve the best possible results for your horse.
Dr Holland will customise your horse's treatment following a thorough evaluation. The treatment can last between 20 and 60 minutes, depending on the horse's needs. Horses are often extremely relaxed after receiving the treatment. In some cases, acupuncture is combined with other treatments to optimise results. Depending on what is being treated your horse will often need a course of treatment following the initial appointment.
